Thoughts.

Post Relay day one thoughts.

\
Of course mine was an Ultra Relay...not the relay where you run the 33.3 miles all at once.  I took breaks..in a van...sitting, without sleep  ;)

Did I train?

I seriously got my ass kicked on the last leg.  My legs did not want to go.  I was exhausted.  Not sure how to train for the heat but the hills were killer too.  I needed another month of intense speed and hill training.

Things I've considered:

Becoming a non-runner
Applying for disability
Checking into an assisted living facility
Laying in bed for a couple of days.

My body rebelled.

I'm swollen from head to toe.  Uncomfortably so.
Still exhausted.
Headache.
The last leg was so hot and there was so much walking and uphills that I ended up trashing a couple of toe nails.  BIG blisters.  Reminded me of my feet after Ragnar Napa.  Not as bad but close.  Painful trip home.  My running around shoes were a little tight on my swollen feet.

NOT MY FEET
But a couple of toes had blisters under the nail.  I made that one mistake where you don't trim your nails for a long time.   Yep.  This picture makes me feel better.  So does a 22 G sterile needle.

All pretty normal for me after such a stressful run.  I will give my body rest.

Fat wings.  Those things on your arms.  I had to glide the shit out of them and I still have a rash.  I wore shorts the last leg...yeah...see above.  I used Glide and Ruby's lube so no rash there.
I felt pretty.

I can't complain.  Jeffrey ran farther and bigger legs then I and he has MS.  He is an animal!

Heather is here helping Jeffrey cool down.  When he stops running he can have seizure like movements.  Scares the shit out of the people around us but someone is always there to catch him and get him cooled down.
He's amazing

There was nausea, paleness, exhaustion.  My poor team all had some challenges.  We used a lot of Zofran.  Tons of water, ibuprofen and attempted to get in as many good calories as possible.  The exception was Heather.  She is marathon trained and was our beacon of health and badassery.

So I'm not going to stop running (well, maybe for a week) and the things I learned are immense.  We are all pretty sick of Ragnar's and this race was exponentially worse then it was the last time we ran it. (4 bathrooms at the exchanges?)  The saddest thing about that is I can't figure out how to get my favorite people in a van for a couple days and have a blast.  Need to come up with some sort of adventure.

I didn't take too many pictures with my phone but I'll download the pics I took with my new camera and collect some pics from my friends and do a proper race recap.

In the meantime I'm watching "My 600 lb life" with a patient that is non compliant and blames everyone else.  In the meantime she lays in bed and bosses everyone around and cries.  I'm not 600 lbs but I'm doing a great impression.  "Daniel, can you buy me ice cream?".

Gifts are accepted.

Don't stare at my medal.

Island Park 2014

Another year!  It started about 12 years ago when a bunch of friends went up to our families cabin in Island Park, Idaho and spent a few days snowmobiling.  Every year since then I've gone up with various friends for a weekend of sledding fun.  This year was a little different.  This was the first year I didn't have the "friend that shall remain nameless".  The one friend that was there every year and the only friend that chose to support my X-husband.  It's a bromance (what now I don't know) I can't understand but I'm determined to make new memories and new experiences with the friends that have stayed supportive to me.

IT WAS A FREAKING BLAST!

This year it was just Kelly and I.

In honor of new memories we called it:
WTFWW Tour 2014
(whatever the f@#$ we want)
BAM!

Instead of writing a new piece, I am just including the letter I wrote to my family and adding pictures.

Family,

Hello!
Cabin report from 1/31 - 2/4.
This year it was just my girlfriend Kelly and I going to the cabin.  We arrived Thursday evening and even though I checked the amount of snow fall I missed judged the amount of snow AND the amount of snow built up from the plows keeping Cascade clean.  Needless to say we were stuck in the driveway and we drug our stuff into the cabin.  Lesson learned.
Kelly trying to help me dig out the car

Next morning.  It's still stuck!

We tried the snow blower.  The snow was too deep or something.

At the cabin there is a 4 wheel drive Jeep Wagoneer.

What could go wrong??

Nothing, but it didn't work.

So the tractor pulled me out and then blew the driveway clean.

Call Greg the plow guy before you go up, no matter what the Internet says.  There was at least 8 inches of new snow when we got there.  We tried everything to get unstuck and I'm pretty sure I heard circus music.  But that's OK.  Learn learn learn.
Kelly - Look..SNOW!  (hehe)

Now THAT is a snow blower

Never get tired of watching it.

The next day Greg came by and pulled out my car and gave the driveway a good cleaning.
The cabin was fine. Everything was clean.  A couple of doors weren't shut but it was overall in fantastic shape.  We did throw away the expired milk.  The snow blower works great except when the snow is that deep.  We were thrilled to get it started.  Wagoneer works great.
Late start out on Friday but we swung by Elks and bought Montana stickers for the 2 RMK's.  They worked awesome too.  They were the only sleds we used.  We had lunch in Last Chance and then swung around back to the cabin.
Ready to roll

Beautiful day!  Last Chance looking at the Snake River

Celebrating Idaho with Baked Potato soup and French Fries!

Sexy pose?

Saturday we headed up to West Yellowstone for brunch and stopped off at Two Top on the way. It was sunny and calm but oh so cold.  On the way back we had a long trip back through Meadow Creek.
Awesome day!

Stopping at Rea's Pass

Calm and clear day at Two Top.  It was frickin freezing though!

Sunday we did a quick loop about 45 miles, working our way through Sawtelle.  Ponds for the awful Superbowl and back to the cabin early.
Duck Farts
Un-celebrating the crappy Super Bowl.

Sunday morning snow!

Monday we set out to try a few trails I hadn't been on in forever.  It worked out pretty well.  We set out up to South Plateau Trail via Black Canyon and it was amazing!  Although the website said that it was freshly groomed I doubt that.  We went into west and hit a new lunch place and then went sound to do a the Lions head loop and down to Valley View then Meadowcreek.  Well, the loop was amazing and fun!  Then when we turned to hit up Valley View we realized how bad the blowing snow was and how hard it was to see the trail.  Of course we didn't turn around and at some point we ended up on US 20 on the side of the road traveling in the snow drifts in blinding snow praying we wouldn't get hit by a car.  (ADVENTURE!)  I could not for the life of me find the one spot we needed to cross to the other side and so we stayed on 20 for about 8 miles.  A long 8 miles in deep drifts.  Thank goodness we had the RMK's.  We finally came up to a big group of rentals crossing the road just before Meadowcreek.  Kelly and I crossed the road and joined them.  While they crossed the road I went up to Kelly and hugged her in gratefulness to be ALIVE.  For some reason that made them think we were lost or something!  (hehe).  We followed them to the Meadowcreek Lodge and then waved thank you and goodbye and we made our way to Stage Stop without any more worries.  Stage Stop is sure having trouble with their gas pumps but we were able to fill them up and get the sleds to the cabins.  We did his some amazing powder (remember, we aren't so much powder people) and quickly learned how to drive through deep powder that flies over you it so deep.  We ended up at the cabin just covered in snow.  We didn't put the sleds away that night.  Kelly's helmet kept fogging up and she was just freezing from cracking the face shield.  Good news - no frost bite!  This is where I thank Dave for telling me what kind of helmet to get and to use goggles.  I stayed warm with 3 layers of thermals with my snow pants and 2 layers of thermals with my down vest, down coat and gortex coat.  We also had 2 balaclava's and neck gators.  I believe it was a high of 17 while we were there.  Mostly single digits.
Snowy Monday

Kelly and I taking a break as we try out some new trails

Bad Ass Gals on Sleds

So beautiful

Post lunch snuggles

It did snow Sunday and Monday and when Greg came by to blow out the driveway so I could get the car out there was another 12 inches or more since his last clearing.  Getting the sleds in was...successful.   Although one sled is facing the back of the garage.  Sorry. We shoveled A LOT of snow just to get the doors down.  We filled them up with oil.  It was -3 that morning and there was quite a breeze.  They ran amazingly well and big thanks to those that keep them going.
That is the amount of snow we got DURING our visit.

Sleds tucked back in their garage.

We cleaned up the cabin in great detail.  I restocked the upstairs bathrooms with TP and paper towels.

I didn't notice anything low or missing.  Everything worked.

Whoever is next, enjoy all the amazing snow!  Just make sure you call Greg first.

***************************

I sat with Kelly and we decided the amount of TIMES some things happened.

What IS National Ab Month.

I started doing some research (Google!) about National Ab Month.  This is what I can gather and isn't necessarily fact.

Proof that I had pretty OK abs (I'm on the right).  Of course I'm pretty sure I was about 12-15 lbs lighter.  This was 2002 - wow - time flies, dressed for an 80's party.
Shari, Lisa, Me
We sang Karaoke that night, "We are Family", damn I miss my 30's!!

Back to Ab Month:

I found this on Google:

I love a good and easy challenge.  I think as runners we are our biggest competitors.  With my foot being cranky, this will keep me doing something every day and keeping my core strong.

I have a few challenges doing ab work every day.  First, my vacations/races.  I'm not too worried about my snowmobiling trip but when I drive down to Arizona for the Del Sol Ragnar it's going to be interesting to get ab work done while being in a van for basically 4 days.

It's on!

How Old??

Sphincter say what?
That is my answer..it's very "Wayne's World" and definitely mature.  I don't mind birthdays and I don't mind getting older but I'm pretty sure I'm over it.  My 30th birthday was average, my 40th birthday kicked ass so I'm going to have to do something spectacular for my 50th.  Thankfully I still have a few years to plan out the entire three day festival.

This year I had the privilege of being allowed/invited to run the Wasatch Back Ragnar and it landed on my birthday.  It seemed perfect.  What a better way to prove that age is just a number by running a relay race?  Even more awesomesauce was the fact that my second leg started right after midnight (on my birthday) and it was my hardest leg. Take that!  Mother Nature.  I'm super stoked about all the minds I picked at the race and ideas about running and running better.  I have a 5K next weekend and a half marathon in August, then I do the Napa Ragnar.

I did spend some time this weekend just mulling things over.   So many inspirational people at these races and people that you hope you never become.  I think running may have become my midlife crisis.  Probably cheaper then a sports car, but not cheap - at least not for me.  (buying new running gear is the BEST)  But the past year has seen lots of great things happen.  I finally landed the job that I always dreamed of but never thought I'd be able to.  I've been running better then ever.  My health is good.  That whole breast biopsy thing was negative.  My kids are doing good and I can't complain about my marriage. My body is better then ever.

So how am I going to kick it this year?  Guess I'll keep on keeping on.  I have at least 6 months of races.   I definitely want to bust off this last 7.4 lbs that appears to linger right around muffin top status.  Guess I'll have to go for another long run to get some thinking done about that.

I know that this next week I'm going to try and figure out how to post from my iPhone.  I take most of my pictures with the iPhone and then I think I'm going to post them and then i don't.  It's all so silly since we have the technology.    Matt gave me an awesome iPod Nano for my birthday.  I love love love it.  I've been looking at getting another one that is a bit easier to use and carry.  Although, all this technology - I think my iPhone and iPod are collaborating right now.  Take over the universe?  me?  Wipe out my pictures????  NOOOoooooo!!!

Post 48th Birthday run.  I look just like my mom in this picture.  Can't wait to get these damn braces off either.  Still feeling Awesome!
Especially with Honey Bucket on our side.  It is amazing how clean they were able to keep them and how easily I can "take the browns to the Superbowl" in them.  Maybe I should get one for our house.  TMI?  ::::shrug::::

Cool instagram pic of my Nano.  Or is it a clock?  It's a clock on the Nano!!  Yes, it's almost 2am and I can't sleep.  I'm in Rock Springs and I'm off shift until 10am.  I should really sleep.  What I really wanted to do was take a picture of my iPhone and iPod discussing their plans for total world domination....but then, what would I take the picture with?  CURSES!!

Ragnar post pic to follow as is the Chicago/Radiohead extravaganza with Daniel.

Mid-life crisis???

Could I be going through a midlife crisis??  NEVER!  I am way too young to be midlife...or am I?? The last month has had so many changes going on I can hardly tell what I am doing from one day to the next.  I have to keep checking my calendar to see what the heck I am up to for the day.

Really big change.  I left bedside nursing and changed my work setting to this:

Fixed Wing Flight nurse for AirMed based in Rock Springs.
No I am not moving, just commuting

This will be my work view.  Well, when I'm not crapping my pants trying to keep patients stable up in the air.

This is a picture I took in February when Al and I were taking off in Salt Lake City to go to Colorado.   Airmed was behind us for take off.  That is my patient care station.  hahah

I applied a year ago to AirMed and the interview made me realize what I really needed to work on to pass the interview.  Not even necessarily to do the job, but to impress upon the team that I could do a great job and work as a team and make decisions best for our patients.  I took my CCRN test and accepted a job in the ER at the U in order to get the experience I need.  Lucky for me all that experience, studying and strong desire to fly paid off and they hired me!  I start this Monday.  NOW, I will spend three months learning a lot of stuff I don't know so I can do my job well.  I can't wait!  I'm a nerd like that.  I like the learning stuff.  That or its my genetically predisposed need to be constantly moving and learning.  (thanks dad and mom!)

The complete downside to that.

Leaving the ER.  A short time there and I have had so much fun.  The people that I have worked with have been so kind and taught me so much!  I usually work at a job until I move onto something else or am just DONE with it. I feel like there were so many more shenanigans to experience!!!  Thanks to everyone who was so awesome!

I also had to say farewell to the SICU.  Luckily Julia (manager) will allow me to pick up extra shifts as needed and I will definitely be doing that.  I am so emotionally and personally involved with the SI that some people are closer to me then family.  I have so much pride in how far I have come as an ICU nurse and how awesome it is to work with such a great crew.  I will miss coding a patient with my besties in the room and we are KICKING ass and taking names.  Not easy to die in that unit.  The only thing that helps a little is that they are going through some major changes and evolving enough that it's like moving on after a great party.

Who wouldn't want to work with these people??!!

Of course it's not all a party.  Sometimes we have to get serious!

Halloween, I think 2008.  I was charging and Terri Michele made us all nursing hats.  Then we took a picture with our attending sitting on a commode.  Dr. Barton was a good sport!
Then we grabbed Dr. Selzman, but we got him a decent chair.
I think he had been at the hospital maybe a month.  He looks suspicious!
Marnell left the SICU in December 07, but will never be forgotten.  She was super smart and a blast!
These are our emergency cardiac med boxes.  We went through three the night before and I was just coming on.  I hope Pharmacist Jeanie sees this and I can tell her.."I didn't open it!"  Kyle should have been proud.  We would break these open when we needed code meds but nothing else and that way we wouldn't break the code cart and charge the patient an extra thousand.  Plus they were easier to keep stocked.
Wasn't the first or the last pair of shoes to be violated in the SICU.  I was always kind of a freak about my shoes and would use shoe covers and all kinds of stuff to try and keep them clean.
I am pretty sure this is 2007 or early 2008.  Just another great day in the SICU.   Little did I know that they could add a few more machines in the next few years.  Look - it's paper charting!!
I found this by my computer one day.  Apparently someone wanted to have Jesus be my co-pilot for the day.  I think he's averting his eyes.  Everyone took cover to see if lightening would strike.
Oh look!  New Bari beds.  Lets see how many nurses we can get in it!!
I was always amazed when they left the chest open.  This one, the tips of my fingers could feel his heart beat.  I know, I'm not wearing gloves.  My hands were super clean!!

When we first started doing bi-vads it was just so amazing.  Yet again, the surgeons soon added another component to it and later on we were hooked up to this AND an ECMO machine.
In no way shape or form can I forget my Triad of Triads.  Being a charge nurse in the SICU has been a lesson of trial and error when it comes to dealing with critical patients, logistics and SOCIAL politics and boundaries.  After having to send an apology letter and giving many apologies for hurting someones feel goods I came up with my triad.  Because sometimes you have to take the high road and act like the adult.

I've learned a lot!

Terri and I share a birthday week.   So I brought us a cake and we had our own party.
See how we are??

Can you see where I could miss it all?  I have had so much support from my friends there.  When I had bad days as a single mother then Danielle would sense it and make me cry..then she would cry and then Tera would get all mad about why we were crying and she would start crying.  I will appreciate those times forever and so lucky to still have Tera and Danielle counted as friends for life!

Memories of my first patient that was a fresh quadriplegic.  He was fresh off his mission and I just bonded with him.  His family was amazing.  That night I had one of many calls from SLPD about this and that with a particular son.  That night my patients mom and I sat in his room and cried together.

Becoming so close to a patients family that when she died I think they were comforting me as much as I was comforting them.

Laughing so hard I almost pee'd my pants so many times I can hardly count.

Watching the miracle that is medicine work.  Sometimes not work.  There is no magical answer it just is what it is.

Seeing Dr. Vargo's eyes in the OR during an especially tragic situation.  He is the only surgeon that I still get nervous around and I still chase him down and ask him questions.  He's no longer an attending in the SICU, but he's an excellent surgeon there.  He also came to my rescue when a particular CT surgeon decided to give me the smackdown (yelling/swearing) in the dirty utility.

Sitting in a patients room with David.  She was dying and her family couldn't be there, it was too much for them.  We sat with her so she wouldn't die alone.

The three circle brain starter.  When you turn three circles around in a room because you have no idea where to start it's all so crazy.

Crashing patient and the surgeon ripped off the ioban and stuck her hand in his chest and held the aorta that was bleeding.  She sat on the bed and we wheeled them both up to emergency surgery.    I always wondered were our dramatic music was at those times. It was just so surreal.

Talking to Dr. Kimball who I have come to respect so much as a friend and co-worker.  Sometimes we are all just real people with real lives and just need someone who can understand.  Plus I have been in a lot of critical patient situations with him.  After a while when you are with the same doctor, it all becomes smooth and seamless.

Tera across the bed from me in a code.  I have no idea why we have done so many together, but when my patient codes my adrenaline is through the roof and having Tera across from me brings my head back into the game.

Yelling at Dr. Barton.  Not proud, but it was the end of a long frustrating day of trying to get someone to listen to me.   It's ok, he yelled at me too once in a while.

I can't think of all the highlights and low lights right now.  It makes me think I should start writing them down.  What a great 8 years!

Thank you peeps!

HELLO AIRMED!!  I'm jumping in with both feet and hoping to land safely..every time!!  I can't wait to get to know the crew and learn to be as bad ass as they are.  Because if I ever have to be transported by air they are the people that I want to do it!!!
